Nitrile rubber withstands contact with mineral oils and greases well, which is why it is the standard material for pumps, gearboxes and hydraulic motors across a wide range of industrial sectors. Its elasticity compensates for minor variations in the clearance between the shaft and the housing without compromising the seal, even when there is slight shaft misalignment.
It performs well up to around 100 degrees Celsius – sufficient for most standard hydraulic applications, including equipment that operates intensively and accumulates heat over long periods. Above this threshold, or when in contact with more aggressive chemicals, a different material is required, such as Viton or silicone, which offer better resistance to extreme thermal and chemical conditions.
You’ll need the shaft diameter, the outer diameter of the housing and the seal width – without precise measurements here, the seal won’t hold and oil leaks will occur. The type of lip (single, double, with or without a spring) also affects how well it retains lubricant and protects against dust, just as with pressure seals or combination seals.
