For shafts exposed to fuels or aggressive chemicals, Viton (FKM) is usually the premium choice, selected when other materials would quickly fail under the combined effects of temperature and the chemical environment. FKM performs much better than NBR when in prolonged contact with fuels, synthetic oils and various industrial solvents – which is why it is preferred where the chemical environment is harsh and frequent replacement of the seal would be costly or risky for the operation of the equipment.
It remains elastic at temperatures well above those tolerated by NBR, making it suitable for engines, fuel systems and hydraulic systems operating under demanding thermal conditions, sometimes for long periods of continuous operation, without rapidly losing its sealing ability. Furthermore, Viton withstands contact with numerous fuels, oils and chemicals commonly found in industrial environments.
As with any seal, you will need the shaft diameter, the outer diameter and the width of the seal. For high-pressure or high-temperature applications, also check the lip type and compatibility with the working fluid to avoid a choice that would artificially reduce the part’s service life. It is also worth checking the condition of the shaft surface, as scratches or wear can affect the seal even if the seal size is correct.
